When the rain and wind have died down, get yourself down to the Broadhill at Aberdeen beach to check out the excellent public artwork "By Order of Me":

By Order of Me is a new artwork on Broad Hill, inviting Aberdeen residents to see the city through the eyes of its young people. By Order of Me explores the personal responses of young Aberdonians to their city’s urban landscape, specifically to the prohibitive rules and instructions that appear on signs through the city – eg. No Ball Games, No Skateboarding,Keep Off the Grass – signs which tell people what not to do.

By Order of Me provides a platform for young people to present their own alternative rules and instructions. The installation is composed of 20 signs across Broad Hill, suggesting fun, stimulating and entertaining ways for people to interact with their urban surroundings. The exhibition is open from 18th February 2011 to February 2012.

By Order of Me has been created by 54 pupils from Kingsford Primary School with visual artist Rachel O’Neill and writer Davey Anderson as part of EXTREME – a major Aberdeen arts project led by Aberdeen City Council’s Arts Education Team in co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland and in partnership with Transition Extreme Sports Ltd.EXTREME is an Inspire project supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland, with additional support from Shell and the Scottish Government.

Started a project in August working with National Theatre of Scotland to produce a huge 'event theatre' piece which will be happening in Mar/Apr 2011. It's called 'Extreme' and aims to: "launch participants and audience members on an unforgettable journey involving sports, theatre, dance, music and art."

I've been working with schools and community groups, delivering creative workshops related to some of the themes we're developing for the theatre production, and have just formed a group of Aberdeen-based visual artists to create some large-scale temporary public artworks in the city.

Some other things coming up in the near future - firstly, the second 26 studio party is happening on Fri 1 Oct...

...and 26 are busy preparing for their first group show at Athenaeum (in Aberdeen), which will open at the start of October.

Work began this week on building the Mobile Creative Village, commissioned by Peacock Visual Arts for Open Weekend 2010. It's a 3-day public installation and participatory project which will be taking place in Aberdeen 23-25 July.

On 11 Sep 2010, 26 Collective will be taking part in Aberdeen's Open Doors Day with a temporary exhibition in the Carmelite, which will be an investigation into collaborative art practice.

I had a sculpture selected for the annual Shell sponsored Aberdeen Artist's Society open exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery, and went along to the opening on Fri 30 Apr.

Some pretty good stuff this year, the show seemed a bit fresher than past offerings... This is a huge etched aluminium piece by George Collier.

Some girls, and behind them the bearded fellow is the brilliant Aberdeen painter/printmaker Jim Furneaux - go to Peacock and buy something he made...

My sculpture 'KSW' (wood, paint, fake fur)

KSW are the initials of Ken Saro-Wiwa, one of nine Nigerian environmental activists who were executed by the Nigerian government in 1995. They were protesting about the massive destruction caused by the multinational oil companies exploitation of the Niger Delta, their Ogoni tribal homeland.

It is alleged that Shell lobbied the government to take action against the people disrupting their operations, which led to the unlawful killing of the Ogoni nine and widespread beatings, imprisonment and torture of other inhabitants of the places Shell operates. In 2009 Shell made an out of court settlement of $15.5m to the families of the Ogoni nine, preventing a case which was soon to begin in a New York court that would have seen Shell answering charges of Crimes Against Humanity, amongst other offences. Kaleyedoscope performance

On Sat 17th April I finally took the mobile-interactive-sculpture Kaleyedoscope out into the streets of Aberdeen, Scotland.

It turned out to be quite a draw...

...even the local young 'hoodies' seemed interested.

Some keen youngsters wanted to see how it all went down in the innards...

The view through the pupil:

Inside the eye was a kaleidoscope linked to a video screen. This played a looped video made by local legend Jon Reid of a previous stage of the project: a collaborative public paint jam at Project Slogan gallery, Aberdeen.

There was a crank-handle which was used to rotate the kaleidoscope inside, which meant at least 2 people had to work together to bring it alive. This fellow demonstrated some particularly vigorous cranking:

to the lovely, and hopefully long-lived Union Terrace Gardens!

Weirdly, the girl I'm talking to on the right here (i think it was Lisa?) was showing me a poem she had written only days earlier which featured the line "kaleidoscope eyes"...

Last Saturday I hosted a collaborative mural painting jam at Project Slogan 2 where I've been artist-in-residence on their 3-month New Work program. I started at the end of November with the intention of making a mobile interactive sculpture to take out into the streets of the city centre. So I set up a studio space in the gallery and started painting and drawing on the walls to get some ideas flowing. I'm really interested in the possibility of art being a tool to help people "stop the world"(Castaneda), which is the notion that in order to perceive the true nature of things ("seeing") we must first question, then strip away, the consensual/accepted version of reality. If this can be done for even a moment, it can open up a world of infinite perceptual possibilities, give a glimpse into the mysteries of the universe...

So i'm thinking of a sculpture which deals with 'seeing', and infinite perceptual possibilities... i've been working with human-powered mechanisms, mirrors, video, wood, fibreglass, and i've been learning alot about these elements as i go! The finished sculpture, and documentation of the processes behind it, will be on show on Fri 6th Feb, with some forays into the city around that time.

So, the Live Art Jam. The wall i'd been painting ideas and things on was in need of action, so I invited everyone I knew to come and help paint it. My good friends Gabberdeen came with their new PA and some hardcore tunes to set the musical tone for the night, and the wall got a good paintin'! Loads of people contributed, which made for an eclectic mix of styles and imagery, some amazing, some jarring, some not so good (there was lots of booze on hand...). But I was stoked that so many people took part and had a good time. Here's some pics:

Just got back from an amazing festive holiday with Allison's family in Pennsylvania and straight into crazy busy-ness with finishing off the interactive sculpture for this project and starting to prepare for the solo show at Peacock Visual Arts, which opens 13th Feb. If only the day job didn't eat up all my precious time...

Anyway, the residency is going great. Although I'm only getting down to the gallery space in the evenings and weekends, the time and space to focus on making stuff has been cool. I've had some good random visitors popping their heads in - the best idea i've been generously gifted so far was from a guy called Stewart who suggested I make a "giant throat lozenger". Ace.

I'll be there till the 9th Feb '09, and my plan is to work on some mobile interactive sculptures to take out into the city centre. There will also be various events going on in the space that you can come check out and get involved with. I'm really excited right now about the near future: got a solo exhibition at Under the Hammer coming up in November - making mostly paintings for that one, which is a new area for me, most definitely a result of collaborative mural work I was involved in this summer. I'm really getting into the more immediate results, as opposed to the long process of big sculpture/social works. There'll probably be some sculpture in there as well, got to deal with the limitations of showing in a pub though - the last exhibition I was in there, someone mistook a wall-mounted sculpture for a coat hook and mashed it all up!

Then in January got a solo exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts. For me its one of the most important elements of the creative culture in our part of Scotland, so I'm honoured to be making new work for this project. I'll be getting involved with the Castlegate (the area of Aberdeen PVA is located) to make drawing, photographs, sculpture, and hopefully some connections with Castlegaters.

There's also a few other projects for next year I'm waiting to confirm...

Anyway, totally stoked to be in the studio with some deadlines.

Saturday 2nd Aug saw the inaugural show at Fittie Institute of Contemporary Art. Curator Monika Vykoukal invited me to make some new work for this excellent space in Footdee, Aberdeen. Here's some pics of the untitled installation, which consisted of a rotating cloud and miniature landscape.

whooooaaaaaa. i just been drinkin with my folks and my amazingly amazing fiance (we justs gots engaged) Now i'm heding out to the studio to make a sculpture for a show tomorrow at my friend mo's for the 2008 fittie fest extravaganza. its in the most coolest shed of ramshackleness and sunlight streaming through dusty old wood cracks. time seems to shrink with a mix of champagne and beer, but i'll have it done, by god. saturday 2nd of augustus from 1000 till late.....

It looks like I'll be collaborating with Brain Ross and Colin Robison on a giant mural/installation at Limousine Bull in Aberdeen sometime soon, maybe August. Sweet. In the meantime we'll be painting a shed next weekend at our buddy Jon's bbq (he made a stop motion film of our last mural/performance) - beer and paint is always a good combo.

Got a wee piece out on the street today, the first of a series of cardboard trees.

It was a good project to work on though, and it was good to get the experience of presenting a proposal to a panel... hopefully I won't sweat so much next time!

Well, just finished the public painting project with Brian today. It was excellent fun - I totally recommend collaborating with other artists as a way to boost energy for your own work... It turned out to be a sweet, sunny day and a few friends stopped by to see what we were up to. It was done on found cardboard with old house paint and acrylic.

This pic shows the mural after we stopped (about 6 hours of work). I think I liked it a little better about 1-2 hours before this, but it was more about having fun and just being out painting on a sunny sunday. Luckily, our good friend Jon Reid recorded the whole process and is making a time-lapse film for us.
