Residency at Project Slogan

Today is the first day of my 3 month artist-in-residence gig at Project Slogan's new space at Langstane Place Aberdeen. I'll be there till the 9th Feb '09, and my plan is to work on some mobile interactive sculptures to take out into the city centre. There will also be various events going on in the space that you can come check out and get involved with. Check back here for a schedule and progress reports real soon, and check out the Project Slogan website too.

Coming soon

I'm really excited right now about the near future: got a solo exhibition at Under the Hammer coming up in November - making mostly paintings for that one, which is a new area for me, most definitely a result of collaborative mural work I was involved in this summer. I'm really getting into the more immediate results, as opposed to the long process of big sculpture/social works. There'll probably be some sculpture in there as well, got to deal with the limitations of showing in a pub though - the last exhibition I was in there, someone mistook a wall-mounted sculpture for a coat hook and mashed it all up!

Then in January got a solo exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts. For me its one of the most important elements of the creative culture in our part of Scotland, so I'm honoured to be making new work for this project. I'll be getting involved with the Castlegate (the area of Aberdeen PVA is located) to make drawing, photographs, sculpture, and hopefully some connections with Castlegaters.

There's also a few other projects for next year I'm waiting to confirm...

Anyway, totally stoked to be in the studio with some deadlines.

Solo show at underground venue...

A couple of in-progress things...

Monday 6 October 2008

I've been working on some drawing and painting - the mural projects with Brian really got me interested in the immediacy of 2d work. I have a solo exhibition 22nd Nov '08 at Under the Hammer in Aberdeen where I'll be showing what I've been up to...

"Stray Dog, EmuS & the leaking brain" @ limousine bull

Here's some pics of the recent three-way collaborative mural I worked on with my two good buddies Brian Ross and Colin Robison at limousine bull artists' collective in Aberdeen. The show is open 12-5 daily until Sep 7 so drop by if you're in the neighbourhood...

Saturday 2nd Aug saw the inaugural show at Fittie Institute of Contemporary Art. Curator Monika Vykoukal invited me to make some new work for this excellent space in Footdee, Aberdeen. Here's some pics of the untitled installation, which consisted of a rotating cloud and miniature landscape.

Mood of Collaboration shed

Dropped in by John's for some beers and a little paintin' on his wee shed. It seems to get dark earlier way too fast after midsummer, ran out of light but mananged to make a start... more to come!

There were some noisy emanations from within the shed, here's John Cromar at work...

Monday 7 July 2008

It looks like I'll be collaborating with Brain Ross and Colin Robison on a giant mural/installation at Limousine Bull in Aberdeen sometime soon, maybe August. Sweet. In the meantime we'll be painting a shed next weekend at our buddy Jon's bbq (he made a stop motion film of our last mural/performance) - beer and paint is always a good combo.

Got a wee piece out on the street today, the first of a series of cardboard trees.

Sunday 22 June 2008

I'll be working soon with my crazy buddy and fellow Stray Dog David 'Big Dave' Downie on some interventionist-type projects along a stretch of canal in Falkirk. There are lots of cool victorian-era features along the canal paths such as this mysterious alcove...

The first linocut print from my super-expensive 'back-of-a-pudding-spoon' press. This is Brian, who didn't recognise himself when I showed it to him...

Here's a pic of the layout model for the public art commission which I didn't get in the end. Damn it.

It was a good project to work on though, and it was good to get the experience of presenting a proposal to a panel... hopefully I won't sweat so much next time!

Tuesday 10 June 2008

A community art project I taught at a school in Aberdeen won an award! Check out the article, sadly no mention of my name but i did do it, honest guv!

Sunday 8 June 2008

Well, just finished the public painting project with Brian today. It was excellent fun - I totally recommend collaborating with other artists as a way to boost energy for your own work... It turned out to be a sweet, sunny day and a few friends stopped by to see what we were up to. It was done on found cardboard with old house paint and acrylic.

This pic shows the mural after we stopped (about 6 hours of work). I think I liked it a little better about 1-2 hours before this, but it was more about having fun and just being out painting on a sunny sunday. Luckily, our good friend Jon Reid recorded the whole process and is making a time-lapse film for us.

Friday 6 June 2008

Its a nerve-racking day today... I'm waiting to hear if I got a public art commission I was short-listed for at the new train station in Aberdeen. My idea was to build two 3 metre concrete sound mirrors to sit across from each other in a civic square.

Really excited to work with my good friend Brian on a collaborative mural this sunday at a park in Aberdeen. We'll be building a big cardboard wall and getting crazy all over that sucker...

Friday 23 May 2008

Just started working on some little linocuts. Never really done it before, but thought i'd give it a go. This is from a photo of a hardy Aberdeen surfer taken last summer near Fittie.

Sunday 20 April 2008

Just finished making this interactive tree sculpture. Its for a playground near where I live - you can throw balls into the branches and they activate some honkers inside before shooting out of the holes at the bottom.

my sweet lady's fingernail with a mysterious mountain shape....

ha, its been a long time since i wrote anything here, i'm a lazy, lazy man.

anyway, here's my brother Andrew, wearing a sweet mask he found on la rambla, barcelona while we were there for his stag weekend.
